Email footers can be used in a number of ways: attempting to exclude liability in certain respects; attempting to place confidentiality obligations on the recipient of the email; and fulfilling the legal disclosure obligations of the sender. Other possible functions of email disclaimers include attempting to prevent "accidental" contracting, and notifying users about monitoring policies.
The enforceability of email footers/disclaimers is open to question.
