Given the breadth of discrimination law, it is essential that employers not only familiarise themselves with their legal obligations, but that they implement a fair policy and stick to it.

One of the first questions asked of employers in discrimination claims is whether they have an equal opportunities policy in place. The absence of an appropriate policy is not a good starting point for the defence of such claims.

This policy sets out the basic stance that an employer should take in managing equality of opportunity in the workplace, and in ensuring fairness for all.
